Reasons for choosing my poems

Although I am not the best poet and may not be a huge fan of it, there are some poems that I like. The first poem I picked for memorization was the poem called “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. I have been a fan of Robert Frost for a while not just because he is a great poet, by my 3rd grade teacher Mr. Reardon also liked him very much and has us read a poem by him each and every day. I also memorized a poem of his for Mrs. Grabs english class last year. He is a clear poet who can get his message across in a number of different ways.

This poem is about a man who was had to make decisions, and those certain decisions have led then to where he is today. They have made all of the difference in his life. He talks about how he has looked at the two, and although one looks like it may be better for him, he chooses the one that he feels suits him. He also is an independent person who does not follow the crowd. I myself, try to be not much of a follower and make my own decisions in life. I know that I may have not picked every best decision, but I picked the right ones that have brought me to where I am today and have made me who I am. I feel that those have been the best ones suited for myself.

The second poem I chose was “Life is Fine” written by Langston Hughes. One thing that I like in poetry sometimes is rhyming throughout the poem, and when I first read this poem, I liked its flow. It is about he has had near death experiences but he has much more to live for and wants to live on.

Book Cover Evaluation

Posted on May 19th, 2008 in Uncategorized by cory15

A theme that I found often when looking at the novels was creating the numbers “451” much larger than the text of “Fahrenheit”. After looking at the multiple book covers for Fahrenheit 451, I found a couple reoccurring images throughout them. One image that I found often was the fire. In almost every book cover, it has flames covering up part of it, or flames are burning books or houses. This is found in many of them because the book is about the burning of books and firemen doing their jobs. Another image related to the fire that I found recurring was the books. They occur because they are the things being burnt by the people of the novel. The last recurring image I found throughout the novel covers was the image of a fireman. This was placed on the cover because they are the ones that are being given the job to go out there and burn the books that people have. They are then forced to burn their houses down if the people resist. There is also a figure of a man made out of newspaper that is being burnt down in many of the novel covers.

The novel cover that speaks to me the most is the eighth one down that has the man with the flamethrower that is burning the many books on the ground. On the cover it then says “Read and Destroy”, meaning that all books are being destroyed. The image on the cover and the quote really relate together because the quote is talking about the destroying of books, and the image in the background has a man with a flamethrower burning all of the books piled up. The orange background really gives the fiery effect of the event also.

How To Play Soccer

Posted on May 14th, 2008 in Uncategorized by cory15

In our world today, many sports have developed and evolved into larger ones. One sport that is currently the most popular sport in the world is soccer. I have been playing soccer for about 12 years now and it is an exciting sport. It not only keeps you in shape, but is a fast and exciting game that is loved my millions.

The first thing to know about soccer is objective. You want to pass with your teammates to get the ball down the field to score. If your team doesn’t have the ball then you are on defense and you are trying to steal the ball from the other team. Only the goalie can use their hands and you have to keep the ball inbounds at all times or it becomes the opposing team’s ball. To score, you want to kick the ball into the back of the net.  You play this game for 90 minutes, and whoever has the most goals at the end wins.

To start the game, both teams are on their side of the 50 and the ball is kicked on from the middle of the field. I play midfield so I will teach you how to play that position. The forwards kick the ball off and usually pass the ball back to you. Once you have the ball you want to pass it off to one of your players, or kick it up to a forward who is making a run. Once you have passed the ball, you want to get in a position where your teammates can pass to you. You continue to dribble and pass around the player until you come close to the goal, which you then can take a shot with your foot, or cross it into the middle for one of your teammates to head into the goal.

When the opposing team gets the ball, you need to step up to the player to steal the ball, or if he is already taken, then get in a position where you can back your teammate up. You continue to try to steal the ball until it is in your possession and your team goes for goal again.

Millions of people throughout the world play this sport because it is such a fun and entertaining game. You should play this sport because it not only gets you running, but the feeling you get from scoring the winning goal or winning a game is exciting. It also gives your better coordination and speed.

Many lessons can be learned from playing this sport. It teaches you the success of dedication and gives you the satisfaction when you put forth all of your effort. It also teaches you teamwork, which is very important to have now, and also later in all of life’s events. Soccer has really taught me to stay focused and gives me happiness every time I step onto the field. This sport really prepares you for future events and gives you the enjoyment you are looking for.

Naps

Points of her arguements:

-Naps are not a waste of time, but actually healthy for the human body.

-It could be proven that people who take naps successfully fulfill their requirements at work better than those who don’t nap.

She constructs this by giving examples and background information about naps.

I don’t really agree with her side. I don’t think naps are needed every day. I don’t take naps and I think i perform well in the daily things that I do. Naps are alright sometimes I guess, but to take one everyday I think is taking it over the top.

That Assertive Angel

Times have changed from the past to today, Now a days it makes no difference on what gender the person is who wrote the review. Women don’t get angry at men for saying things about them any more than women. But back in the days, women writing things about men would not have a happy outcome. When women didn’t have the same rights as men and were treated differently, women were afraid to break out and say what was on their mind. They were meant for cooking food, taking care of the children, and maintaining the house. They didn’t have any other purpose. So when they wrote about men, this would cause uproar in many of the community. So as times have changed, women are free to write reviews on men related topics and not be criticized for it any more than a male.

When he talks about the angel being dead and no longer lives in the imaginations of women or men, he is talking about how women no longer are separated from the men. They are all equal. Before, women would have to watch out what they would say because they thought they were below the male population. Now, everyone is equal and they don’t have to think about it because no one is treated differently than any other. The angel has been destroyed for most women for they know that there will be no discrimination towards them. Before women would take care of the house and cook, but as times have passed, more men and women are working together and taking on these tasks together.

Angels in the House Questions

Questions for Discussion

3.  In the quote in paragraph five, I think that Woolf means that to write fictional stories, you can’t be thinking in a logical way, as you would in a “concious” mind, so you must be in a unconcious state of mind. I agree with this because fictionall stories are supposed to be creative and if the story is alll logical and realistic, it wouldn’t be a good fictional story. There would benefit from being in a unconcious mind because they wouldn’t be thinking in a realistic way. They can be more creative this way.

Rhetoric and Style

4. Woolf is saying this to show how the angel slowing enters her writing and then spreads thoughout it.

5.  These short sentences help show that her tone is serious and is displaying the aspects of the angel.  She states “She is utterly unselfish.” This is showing the personality of the angel in the house.

Missing Assignment: Windows and Mirrors

I disagree with the quote written by Sydney J. Harris stating that there is no value in recognizing students for their acedemic achievements. By rewarding students for their hard work, it not only gives the students a boost for working hard, but also pushes students to recieve one of these awards. I agree that education is not about competition, but by awarding students for their hard work, others may become somewhat jealous and work much harder to obtain one of these awards.

Awarding students only congratulates students for their hard work and makes other students work harder. There is no harm in that. If students feel offended about not recieving one of these awards, then they should work harder and put more effort into their studies if they really want to get acknowledged.
