That Assertive Angel

Times have changed from the past to today, Now a days it makes no difference on what gender the person is who wrote the review. Women don’t get angry at men for saying things about them any more than women. But back in the days, women writing things about men would not have a happy outcome. When women didn’t have the same rights as men and were treated differently, women were afraid to break out and say what was on their mind. They were meant for cooking food, taking care of the children, and maintaining the house. They didn’t have any other purpose. So when they wrote about men, this would cause uproar in many of the community. So as times have changed, women are free to write reviews on men related topics and not be criticized for it any more than a male.

When he talks about the angel being dead and no longer lives in the imaginations of women or men, he is talking about how women no longer are separated from the men. They are all equal. Before, women would have to watch out what they would say because they thought they were below the male population. Now, everyone is equal and they don’t have to think about it because no one is treated differently than any other. The angel has been destroyed for most women for they know that there will be no discrimination towards them. Before women would take care of the house and cook, but as times have passed, more men and women are working together and taking on these tasks together.

Angels in the House Questions

Questions for Discussion

3.  In the quote in paragraph five, I think that Woolf means that to write fictional stories, you can’t be thinking in a logical way, as you would in a “concious” mind, so you must be in a unconcious state of mind. I agree with this because fictionall stories are supposed to be creative and if the story is alll logical and realistic, it wouldn’t be a good fictional story. There would benefit from being in a unconcious mind because they wouldn’t be thinking in a realistic way. They can be more creative this way.

Rhetoric and Style

4. Woolf is saying this to show how the angel slowing enters her writing and then spreads thoughout it.

5.  These short sentences help show that her tone is serious and is displaying the aspects of the angel.  She states “She is utterly unselfish.” This is showing the personality of the angel in the house.

Missing Assignment: Windows and Mirrors

I disagree with the quote written by Sydney J. Harris stating that there is no value in recognizing students for their acedemic achievements. By rewarding students for their hard work, it not only gives the students a boost for working hard, but also pushes students to recieve one of these awards. I agree that education is not about competition, but by awarding students for their hard work, others may become somewhat jealous and work much harder to obtain one of these awards.

Awarding students only congratulates students for their hard work and makes other students work harder. There is no harm in that. If students feel offended about not recieving one of these awards, then they should work harder and put more effort into their studies if they really want to get acknowledged.

1. You are looking at the scores at the end of the soccer season and you see that Fife High School was never scored on once, they were undefeated. So you think that they must have an amazing goal keeper, but after watching tapes of the games, you find something. You see that the defense that Fife High School has is actually the amazing factor of their team, so the goalie never even touches the ball. He just sits in the goal for the entire 90 minutes.

2. So your looking at buying a new laptop, but you can’t decide between a Mac or a Dell. You have looked at the reviews for both of these computers and it shows that Dell has a faster processor. Mac shows that it has a higher storage capacity. You decide to go with the Dell. As you are talking to your friends in the car on the way to the store, one of them says “I used to have a Dell and it was the slowest thing! It ended up crashing and I had to throw it away.”

Do you still want your Dell Laptop?

3. One day as you are taking a walk down the street you see a police car hidden behind the bushes across from the apartments next door. You assume it is nothing and continue on your walk. A couple days later you go on your daily walk and see the police car is still hidden by the same apartment. People exit the car and quickly speed off in another. You become curious but decide not to worry about it.  Days go on but you say nothing. Days later you are watching the news and see that a police car was stolen six days ago with many top secret files inside. If only you would have spoken up and told someone before it was too late.

1. The effect this has is it gives the audience a clearer picture of what he is talking about. He sets us up so that his idea will have more meaning to it. It is asking about the tone.

2.  An example of an odd juxtaposition is on page 602 where he talks about the skeleton of a human body being similar to machines and how they work. He speaks of pulleys and wheel. This is asking about diction.

3.  When he uses all of these phrases, it creates an accepting tone, where he knows about machines and how they are advancing, but he doesn’t like the fact that they are attempting to replace parts of nature and humanity.  This question is asking about tone.

4. The effect he creates when addressing the audience in paragraph four makes this whole article more personal. It involves the audience so they know that they are all a part of this problem, not just him. This question is talking about purpose.

 5. This pattern that he uses in paragraphs 4-7 is very effective and helps his article. He could have used many different types of styles or patterns to get his ideas across, but be using cause and effect, it gives the audience a percise vision of what he is talking about. This was the best way to get his ideas across to the audience. This question was dealing with diction.

6. By using all of these verbs, it really gave the audience a picture of what was occuring. He described every action that he made and this let the audience know what he was doing. This question is dealing with diction.

7. What I found ironic in this paragraph is he is talking about how nice it is outside and describing the clear sky and mountain spring, and the whole time he has this innocent little bird caged in a small box. This question is dealing with syntax.

8.  The effect given from changing the writing from present to past shows that time has progressed and it ties the whole story together with the birds being free again. This question deals with syntax.

9. Pathos, logos, and ethos all effect each other to create a bridge between humanities and science. Logos brings science and humanity together and pathos appeal to humans. Ethos deal with the effect machines have made. This question deals with stratagies.

Discussion Questions for The Bird and the Machine

1.  To feel like I was in the new world, I would have to read about new futuristic inventions such as flying cars or houses being built on the moon. It would have to be something drastic that is really abnormal than the everyday things we hear about.

2. This matter is reciprocal because science involves itself everytime new things are founded. The internet is an example of this because many sites on the internet are created from the knowledge people have learned from recent sites.

 3.  I see this scene differently because I do not have the same uncontrollable love for nature as Eiseley does. I see this as a somewhat devastating time that we have been taken over by a bunch of tiny birds. Eiseley might say that he is very happy for the hawk’s nest being restored. He would know that the hawk has a home to stay at and be safe.

 4. In paragraphs 21-23 there is an example of epiphany. It says that Eiseley struggled with the bird and even was injured by it, but he never let it go as he climbed down the ladder. He then lets the bird go for he feels that it should not be held back. This suggests that he feels that people should not alter nature, but leave it how it stands.

 5. A sentence from the first three paragraphs that would best sum up his thoughts is the sentence “Its life I beleive in, not machines.” This sentence gets it across that he loves life and does not feel that machines should take over in our world.

6.  This essay shows that science, technology, and humanity are all important to eachother. Without one, the others wouldn’t exist. Science and technology are what have made humanity what it is today.
